Earth science has played and will continue to play a vital role in the development of human society. Scientific advances and techological developments in the past 70 years, led by the integration of interdiscipline research, has greatly promoted the growing field of Earth science. Some of the underlining research themes driving the recent advances have focused on the mecahnisms, processes, and interactions between the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. To celebrate the 70thanniversary of the China University of Geosciences, we would like to call all geo-scientists to share their distinctive and brilliant thoughts on the “Top 70 Questions Facing Earth Science”. All themes that sit on the frontier of geology and sustainable development are welcomed. We are looking forward to hearing your voice.
SCOPE
The scope of this call covers all disciplines of Earth science, including but not limited to: carbon neutrality, transititional energy and natural resources, geo-ethics, geo-hazards, geo-physics, deep-time geology, marine geology, planetary geology, and paleontology. We encourage questions on recent advances in geological theories, new technological developments, and engineering solutions.
AUTHORS GUIDELINES
Please include the following four parts in your submission: 1) your question, 2) the subject area, 3) a list of key words, and 4) a short description of your question. In the short description please include details about the background, core idea, scientific/engineering value, scientific progress, and significance of your question. If selected, authors will be invited to submit a 2000 word essay on the topic and be invited to the 70th anniversary celebration ceremony.
SELECTION PROCESS
There will be a two part selection process. Firstly, the initial selection will be conducted by the Academic and Editorial Committee of China University of Geosciences (CUG, Wuhan). The preliminary selection assessment will include quality, novelty, as well as scientific and social interest. The second review will be conducted by an expert review committee, which will be comprise of selected experts from across the field of Earth science who will jointy discuss and appraise the submissions.
IMPORTANT DATES
Submission due date: June 30, 2022.
Selection and review: 1st July to 15th July, 2022.
Successful submissions will be noticed: 15th July to 20th July, 2022.

RELEASE OF INCLUSION QUESTIONS
1. “Top 70 Questions Facing Earth Science” will be released as one of the 70th anniversary celebration activities of CUG (both offline and online). At that time, relevant question authors and review experts will be invited as guests to attend the release ceremony.
2. The selected questions will be published in the special issues of “Journal of Earth Science (in English)” with the title of “Top 70 Questions Facing Earth Science”.
3. No APC will be charged for selected submissions, appropriate royalties would be paid for selected authors.
BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF JES
The Journal of Earth Science (JES), founded in 1990, is a bimonthly geological journal published by China University of Geosciences for the dissemination of information about all branches of geology and associated technologies in the exploration and utilization of Earth resources. JES reports essential and original academic research results in all fields of Earth Sciences. The English version of JES was started in cooperation with the international publisher Springer in 2009, and Springer is authorized as the only publisher to globally publish the electronic version of JES.
The Journal of Earth Science (JES) has been listed with a Science Citation Index (SCI) since 2007. For consecutive years, JES has been awarded “The Highest International Impact Academic Journals of China”, and in 2019 was acknowledged as a “Key Project of Action Program for Excellence in Science and Technology Journals of China”. Since 1990, JES has had the aim to be a first-class academic journal in Earth Sciences and according to the second quarter of 2020 Journal Citation Reports (JCR), theimpact factor of JES is 2.907.
